# Soft Washing vs Pressure Washing: Which Does Your Home Need?

Using the wrong method on stucco, siding, or shingles causes real damage. Here's how to tell them apart.

These two get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Choosing wrong is how homeowners end up with water behind their siding, stripped paint, or a roof full of loose granules.

## Pressure Washing

High-pressure water that blasts grime off hard surfaces. It's the right tool for concrete driveways, walkways, patios, and block walls, where the surface can take the force and there's nothing to force water behind.

## Soft Washing

Low pressure plus a biodegradable cleaning solution that dwells, kills organic growth at the root, then rinses away. It's what belongs on siding, stucco, painted trim, eaves, and any roof surface. Because it kills mildew and algae rather than just knocking them off, the results last far longer, typically 12–18 months on a house wash.

## Quick Reference

-   Driveways, patios, concrete, block walls: pressure wash 
-   Stucco, wood or vinyl siding, painted trim: soft wash 
-   Asphalt shingles, tile, and shake roofs: soft wash only 
-   Solar panels: neither, deionized water and soft brushes 

## The Roof Rule

Never pressure wash a roof. Those black streaks on asphalt shingles are gloeocapsa magma algae feeding on limestone in the shingle. High pressure strips protective granules and voids most manufacturer warranties. Soft washing is the method the asphalt shingle industry itself recommends.
