# Hard Water Stains on Windows: What Works and What Doesn't

Vinegar and elbow grease only go so far. Here's what actually removes mineral deposits, and how to stop them coming back.

Santa Clara County water is hard. When sprinklers hit glass and the sun bakes the droplets dry, calcium and magnesium stay behind. Do that a few hundred times and you get the cloudy white haze most South Bay homeowners recognize.

## What Actually Works

Fresh deposits usually come off with a standard professional clean. Moderate buildup needs an acidic mineral remover applied with the right pads and dwell time. Severe etching, where minerals have eaten into the glass surface, requires a polishing compound and, occasionally, glass replacement.

-   Etched glass: polishing restoration, or replacement in extreme cases 

## What to Avoid

Steel wool, razor blades on tempered glass, and abrasive powders all scratch. Strong acid products from the hardware store can damage window frames, seals, and any surrounding paint or stucco if they run. If you try a DIY approach, test in a hidden corner first.
